Ramadan is the month to deepen the relationship with Allah ﷻ.
The purpose of Ramadan is not only to restrict ourselves from food, but we have to resist all evil things. Characteristics like lousy language, evil speaking and angriness must be avoided.
Thus, a believer has to show calmness and good behavior to attain the privileges of the blessed month of Ramadan because Allah ﷻ doesn't need us to abandon food.
As reported in one hadith Narrated by Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah ﷻ does not need his leaving his food and drink (i.e., Allah will not accept his fasting.)." - Sahih al-Bukhari 1903
The month of Ramadan is a gift from Allah ﷻ. The purpose is to restore the lost connection. So, the month of Ramadan is provided to us to acquire the consciences (Taqwa) of Almighty Allah ﷻ as mentioned in the Holy Quran.
"O You who believe! Fasting is prescribed upon you as it was prescribed on those before you so that you may attain Taqwa" Quran – [2:183]
The intention behind fasting is to lift our spiritual level and have a conscience of Allah ﷻ. Hence, we can get nearer to Him. We have to submit our wills under the will of Allah ﷻ this will help us to obtain willpower too. Cause for Allah ﷻ, you are leaving the Halal things, so leaving Haram will also become easier for you.
If you do not abandon such things then you aren't reaping the fruit.
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"There are people who fast and get nothing from their fast except hunger, and there are those who pray and get nothing from their prayer but a sleepless night." - Sunan Ibn Majah 1690
Therefore, in this hadith, it is mentioned that some people will only get hungry and have sleepless nights during Ramadan. They won't be getting any of the fruit of Ramadan because they just constrained themselves from food and nothing extra.
For building connection and stimulating the spiritual level, we have to recognize the significance behind this month. We have to do those things which are being told to us. And leave all those things which are restricted. In that way, we'll get blessings and Taqwa.
To cement our relationship with Allah ﷻ, we need to communicate with Allah ﷻ. In order to achieve that purpose, we have to offer our 5-time compulsory prayers, spend some time doing Dhikr, reciting the Holy Quran, and performing Qiyam ul Lail (Taraweeh). Only these will help us to strengthen our Eman and have Taqwa.
